I just got mine in the mail today and it's failry cool. It looked as if someone had already returned it by the way it was packaged. The mouth just doesn't seem to open all the way up like I believe it should. Although, not having another one to compare it to it's hard to tell. It seems sometimes when using it in control mode and using the joysticks the movement is very loud and somewhat unresponsive. It also says it has 4 distinct moods and I have a hard time telling the difference between the moods. These are fairly expensive and just wanted to know what everyone else who owns them thinks of them?

Hey there John!
I don't technically own one, but a friend got one from our local Wally World a few months ago when they got down to about $45, and we've both played with it/hacked it a lot ever since.
I have to say that I think yours is not really broken or anything, even if the box looks like it was a return (and may well have been from someone who also found the limited movements disappointing).
To be honest I never was dreadfully impressed by this product once I saw/operated it in person. The movements are limited, too subtle to convey much. I also noticed the loud noises, delay in response, etc. during certain functions.
At the original price point it was not worth it at all.
At the discounted prices currently available, it is a great base for hacking and experimenting.
But I've never really thought it was anything special as is.
Neat idea, unique product, but for a haunter ultimately a let down unless you want to open it up and change servos, mechanical components, and bring it to life the way it was advertised to already be.

Thanks for you input on this. What kind of hacks did you guys come up with on these?

The hacks I referred to were mostly cosmetic, with some mechanical stuff thrown in.
Things like removing the smaller motors and figuring out how to install micro servos in their place... essentially we are trying to make it so that the innards can be controlled/programmed with VSA or one of the other animatronics programs out there. Not being computer/code geniuses, we stick with what we know about servo controlled stuff, and try to retrofit things. As of yet, I have no how-to or even real goal-oriented hacks yet, just tinkering, destroying, rebuilding.
(I.E., If you dremel out areas in the corners of the jaw and along the underskull, you can get more exaggerated movement with the mouth. Same with the eyebrows, etc.)...
As far as I know, there is no definitive hack site anywhere.

One crtiiter per box...It's very cool for what it is. The Wow Wee company spent some money on this prop. They even has a silicone mask, making it very long lasting. The problem for hacking it like mentioned above is that is uses very unique servos...It has the electonics for the servos in the base of the prop. Not bulit in like most servos. but if I ever wanted to build a Flying Monkey from the wizard of oz, this is where I would start LOL.
