finished these up last night but wanted to take pics of them in daylight. they are just tin foil and great stuff. i used a cardboard box that was the right size i wanted, and just wrapped tin foil on it. then sprayed great stuff on (used about 3.5 can {=/ ) had to do the top and bottom, let it cure, then the sides. anter it all cured i took out the cardboard and carved them with a steak knife. base coated one black and the other gray. after they dried i painted them a gray/lighter gray with a sponge. then added a mix of caramel and burnt umber with a bit of moss green sponged on. after that sponged on a final bit of moss green/tiny amount of burnt umber to the top facing surfaces.

here they are

Batfly, honest to goodness, make three or four sizes/styles of those rock shells and SELL them. I'd buy a dozen, easily. A lot of Haunters would love to have a simple, quick means of hiding their floods and many only have enough time to build their props and so on, and would love to have a ready-made product for their own haunts.
Count me in for some when you get them going, hahah! Excellent and useful project, my friend!

BATFLY that looks very realistic. Is that great stuff? If you make any others...wal mart has the other type of great stuff (I can't remember the name...and I probably used 20 cans this year:)) in a can with 33% more. I actually ;ike it better than great stuff and it's the same price ....but 33% more.

You gotta love that. I guarantee, someone will comment, "Look at that, even THE ROCKS look creepy!" Nice Job, BATS. Consider it copied. I'm using directional spotlights in mine, to highlight a pair of gargoyles. The lights will be inside PVC Sleeves to keep the heat away from the foam and foil.

Batfly ... these are awesome! I'm sorry I didn't comment sooner. I am so going to make some of these for my 2007 cemetary display. I'm having some problems with my spots -- the silver on the backs of the bulbs, for some reason, has rubbed off. So, instead of just seeing the green or blue from the front, there is also a *bright* white from the back -- ruins the creepy lighting. And *this* is the perfect solution.

Thanks so much for sharing!!!

Batfly , i agree with MikeC , you should make lots of those and sell them , i too would buy those , we are always seing our floodlights to light up the decor, people step on it AND BREAK THEM etc.... and those are so awsome , great great job you did.

I think these would be great year round. People are always having spotlights on their nice landscaping, what better way to hide the large ugly spotlights!! I say make some nice big ones and sell them on ebay, see what happens. You could list them under "Landscaping". LOL.

Those are sweet, Batfly!

I was considering making blue foam "surrounds" for mine, but that would be so labor intensive and messy. I like yours MUCH better :) Seriously, if you wanted to sell those on eBay, I bet you'd find a market for them. Shipping would be pretty cheap too, I mean, how much can they possibly weigh?

I dont Know about GREAT Stuff In bulk but there is a products from smooth-on called foam-it and it does come in bulk. they have different foam it some expand 10 times the amount you mix. and it is mixed in 1 to 1 ratio. I use it all the time and it is Great. if interested call Dallas 1-800421-4378 Ricky, or hollwood Ca 1-800348-4349 talk to Glenn. They have starter kit for $30.00 and it goes a long way. :D

thanks for all the comments and sorry i haven't replied sooner. been busy with work and a new puppy (7 months old now and in adolescence!)

i wouldn't copy my old idea as they need a major revision in design! they warp under the heat of the flood light. nothing scary or fire hazard like. just not good in my book.

i only use two right now. they'll be scrapped as i make new ones that will be better. i want to make them use less great stuff. i'm thinking making the basic shape out of chicken wire, covering with tine foil, then using the great stuff. before, the great stuff was filling it out completely as i started out with just a box shape. it was using about 2 cans per rock =O . this new method would hopefully use less and also give more room for the heat to dissipate.

i have plans to make several difference shapes for various implementaions as well. more to come in a very detailed how to with pictures and plans in a few months. for now most halloween stuff is on hold due to life =P i usually start in april anways (after the holiday season, work boom (freelancer), and family birthdays all in feb and march). the workshop is getting cleaned, redone and possibly painted halloween colors. it's already gotten new shelves and a standing tool box. next is a workbench. with the added work flow from it i'll just need to build a warehouse in the backyard to store everything =/ after the workshop is holloween building time =D

if i were to sell them on ebay i'd want to make a stronger top coat just so they'd last. as a prop i make for myself i don't care too much. but for others i'd want them to get what they pay for. i'd like to do fiberglass but i HATE the stuff before it cures!!!!!! was thinking maybe latex. but i'd have to be sure my new design doesn't warp and peoples' purchases don't change over time =P

oops, got carried away with this post. but yeah, wait for the revised rocks as they will be coming!

now you all have me really thinking about remaking these more. darn it! this forum is so distracting =D
