I want to build a thrashing MIB prop this year, but I've never used any of the prop timer devices. Is there a good place to start learning?
I'm using some old fence pickets to build the crate, in lieu of scrounging up some old pallets.
Also, is pneumatic the only way to go? The thought of the air compressor running every time the prop runs isn't very appealing, since I can't really isolate the A/C I have.
Thanks... earliest start ever!

Here is one of the most informed site for the Halloween minded. You will find plenty of information, infact your head will start spinning! Mine did! There is also a how to for a Crate Beast, similar to what your looking for. You can use Pneumatics and motors for motion, pneumatics are very easy and are simple to control. The A/C doesn't need to run every time the prop activates that's what the tank is for on the A/C, plus you could add extra air storage like, small disposable propane tanks, disposable helium tanks (Wal-Mart), old propane tanks for your grill, or portable air tanks. You can also run a longer hose to the prop from the A/C if your worried when it fills. Your A/C will still need to run, these will help it from running as often.

If you're talking about the standard monster in the box prop, my brother in law made his based off of Mark Butler's on the monsterlist. Worked like a charm and scared the you know what out of many TOT's. They skipped his house altogether (the little ones).

No Sweetie, it's not. As Pandora mentioned, Mark Butler created the SEMITB (Super Easy Monster In The Box). Here's the link:

There's also another set of instructions that were inspired by the above that's built inside an old trunk. I'm thinking of using these instructions myself:

I want to see your tool kit if you can build a display inside of an elephant's trunk!
It must also require alot of Knock-out gas to make him just lay there and be receptive to this?
And I thought ship-building in a glass bottle was a lost art!
Really, though, building things in small spaces is very tricky and as my house gets more crowded that is where I am "going" with my constructions and related projects.
I have had an old steamer trunk in an upstairs hallway that has done "nothing" but create anticipation for many years, but someday , when it decides to come to life, I know I will be "getting" those old customers who have been coming here for 20 years!
This kind of fun makes it all worth it!
The trick with old furniture and such things is to first realise the amount of abuse it is going to be getting and construct a steel frame actually inside to take that abuse. I don't like repairing things that could have been made stronger to begin with. I would rather be making something new."My Insanity is well-respected, until they wiggle free and become a stringer for a tabloid"
