Default Mask Filler ?'s

Hi Folks,

I was reading a thread in the Horror Classified section where ronhurst was selling a head mold. In this thread he mentioned a/b foam and it sparked an idea/question/problem. Would this stuff be good to use as a filler for masks that you would like to use as part of a prop. If not, are there any other suggestions as to what to use to give the mask some sort of permenant stuffing, even if it was just to fill in around a styrohead? I don't like using Great Stuff for this as I've tried it and it over expands the mask distorting the face.

How about DAP expanding foam in conjunction with a wigform. Doesn't expand nearly as much as Great Stuff and doos not get rock hard either. Otherwise, maybe modeling clay around a wigform?

I'm making a couple columns that'll have masks atached to them and painted to look like stone. I was thinking along the line of fiberglass, the kind from Wal-Mart. Just carefully lining the inside of the mask to make it hold it's shape. I tried an experimental patch of mask and it worked. I was going to try Great Stuff but I didn't want the distarted face like you mentioned.

Mr. Unpleasant, good question. I've used the wig head and found them to be too small for most rubber masks....but have not found a substitute...which is the right size and lite. It will be interesting to see what ideas/solutions come from your post. Its one I will be watching!

Mr. Unpleasant, yes yes yes. A/B foam works great. I only use the wigheads for masks that are in my non prop collection. Monster mud props get filled with A/B foam. It is a little heavier, but it works alot better than the expanding foam. Just a tip for ya though. Tape the openings real good or have a rag handy to wipe away the foam that comes out the ear nose mouth and eye openings. Plug the eye holes with ping pong balls and paint 'em in as eyes. I always have foam that leaks out the mouth holes, etc. Wipe it quickly before it dries. And wear latex gloves. This stuff is sticky.
Another trick I use on pneumatic props where weight is an issue. I use milk jugs instead of wigheads. They are lighter and bigger. Fill the voids with plastic walmart bags. Build a prop and recycle. Man I sound just like a tree hugger!

Ron

Could you put a plastic shopping bag or tripple bag into the mask then add the foam into the plastic bag then the foam won't leak out ? Since I have "never" done this "yet" but I am going to soon. This is how I was thinking to do it. Last year I used wig heads but the masks didn't look right and fell off at times. So I was going to fill them with great stuff a little at a time and a PVC pipe in the middle ?

Yeah, you can do that. You will have to use a small razor to cut the bag out or the eye and mouth openings when its dry. The only problem is that the mask will not bond to the plastic bag and it will still slip around a bit, even though its filled.

So what exactly is "fiberglass, the kind from Wal-Mart"? Have I been missing something?
