What about the metal strips they use at the end of chain link fences.I believe they use them to pull the chain link tight and fasten it to the posts.I knoe i've seen it at the big box home improvement stores.I also recall seeing a site last year showing plans on using these for the same type of cages.When I find that site I will post It. Found the page Iprinted on the metal cage,but no address on it.Did remember that if you go to the Anatomical Chart co. and go to the halloween project page there are two skeleton cage plans.I like the skeleton cage 2 . hope this helps someone. Rick

Looks like 1x2's would work fine. Avoid having to split 2x4s and still get the same effect. Unless your going to have a real person in there. Have them in costume and tell everyone its the ToTer who didn't say thank you.

Painting before assembly will help seal the wood, but if there is tannin or moisture inside it will still crack and bubble. Go with kiln dried if you can get it in the size. Tannin woods may bleed through so you may need a stain blocking primer before your paint top coat. T-111 plywood if famous for this.
