Well I wrote to Sick Inc and they replied with the following info:
    Hello,

My name is Eric Simmons and I am an applications engineer here at Sick Inc. I received your questions concerning the WTR1.

1)Does this basically open a valve that will release air when the optic is triggered?

Yes it will. The sensor is an "Air to Drive" device, so it will actually open the valve when the sensor does not sense anything.

    2) If so how much PSI will it take and how long is the valve open for.

The psi rating is from 0 to 65 psi. The valve will stay open for as long as the photo-eye is activated, or in this sensors case when product is not present.

    3) What are the power requirements?

    It is a DC 24 V sensor.

If you have any further questions please contact me.

    Thanks,

    Eric Simmons
    Application Engineer

Based on this info I decided to buy them. I'll let you know how it works out.

Just an observation for air cylinder operations, the vales are listed as 3/2 way and they work in a Push mode. To get Push / Pull operation you need a 4-way valve. 2-way valves work well when gravity or springs will be used to return the cylinder to it’s at rest position. The Vile things simple popup would work well with a 2-way valve. I use a leg air blaster at the entrance of my grave yard and the unit would be ok for that.

Photo eye 300 mm to 900 mm (12” to 36”) is respectable. This appears to be a diffuse unit that senses objects that pass in front of the sensor by reflecting IR light off of the object back to the sensor. In my experience these diffuse units only fire 70% of the time. Reflective units that employ a reflector to return the light beam and trigger when the beam is broken fire 99.5% of the time with a more pin point control. The dark selectable sensing option is a must for our usage.

    Hope that helps.
