Dark Gardener, great job on the monster mud props. I love them both but especially the creepy little "croucher" on the roof Very nice work!

Very cool! You're a master! Being a novice, I have to admit working with Monster Mud is a bit intimidating. (heck, I'm still having problems with Snotrag Mache!![:I]) Is it as difficult as it looks? How heavy do your props get?

That's a scary thought!

Hey, I was a novice too...until I tried it.

Monster Mud is not difficult to work with...just messy. You need to wear old clothes that you don't care about and also rubber gloves (the household kind...not the disposable latex kind...they're too flimsy). But it's true what they say at the Terror Syndicate website...Monster Mud is VERY addictive.

They can get kinda heavy though both of mine can be lifted and moved by one person. To move Herkamer, I get behind him and kinda do a Heimlich Maneuver grip around him. The Croucher is a little tricker beacuse he's mounted on a pretty stout piece of plywood for a base. And I've got to hoist him up onto the roof of the garage. Maybe I'll have help this year.

I built frames for mine out of scrap wood (2x4s and the like) and chicken wire. The frames need to be study enough to support the weigh of the MM. When it dries, the MM is pretty tough stuff and does a lot towards holding the whole piece together.

Give it a shot. IT'S FUN!!!

Roger

Thanks for your encouragement, Dark Gardener. I may just try MM next spring. Right now I'm afraid I've got too many irons in the fire for this Halloween. Just what I need; another addiction!!

That's a scary thought!

Amazing work, Gardener!

Hurkamer is mighty impressive! I'm in awe.

I've almost finished with my first MM creation, but learned my lesson early on. The site I used recommended landscape burlap to go with the joint compund and black paint, but here's a tip for newbies: DO NOT USE LOOSELY WOVEN BURLAP!

Because I was a novice, I just bought what Lowe's had. Spend a little more and get something TIGHT or something heavier than burlap (like canvas). The stuff that I used had STRINGS coming out all over the place. And it was much messier than it should have been. It was a nightmare, and made the surface of my vampire's pants look like heavy wool because of the texture.

I wanted to do another figure this year, but I won't have time, and my first MM really soured me on it til next year. I think with some higher quality fabric though, I'll be OK.
