Default Inexpensive hooded robe/cloak?

I'm looking for an inexpensive extra-long black hooded robe. I have searched Ebay and there are a few, albeit expensive. Also, I checked wiccan/pagan supply stores. My goodness! They are outrageous!

And I can't sew.

Any thoughts?

I find them usually pretty cheap at the thrift stores this time of year, it's early yet.. Also, someone had a good idea of using those crappy graduation gowns... wouldn't be too hard to sew on a hood. Actually, those kinds of robes are VERY easy to sew, the biggest cost is the fabric.

I'd like to have a black velvet (or similar heavy material) robe with the big bell-shaped arms. The ones I keep finding for sale online for less than $100 are not long enough.

You can sew, maybe not well. McCall's has a hooded pattern (MP235) that only has 6 pieces and JoAnn's is having a sale on fabric starting Saturday. I put this cloak together in about 3 hours for a friend, the worst part is wrestling 7 yards of fabric. I couldn't sew either but the Halloween obsession drove me too it, you can make some great stuff for costumes and decorations on the cheap, even if you mess up it is dark nobody will notice. So borrow a machine and try! I can talk you through the directions, just hollar!

If you cant sew, just get some fabric glue. It does work. It wont be as strong as thread holding it though. I have jo-ann coupon for 40% off and you cab get as many yards of fabric if you want. Let me know if you want the coupon and ill email it to you.

I have been sewing for over 18 years now and I can tell you making it yourself is what is going to save you a bit. The material you want is what is going to cost you out the wazzoo's ! But , start checking the dollar rack at Wally World. this time of year the black fabric they get in is amazing . The McCalls pattern behenthere suggested is a great one . Yes seven yards of material is alot to wrestle !!! I think that is also why people charge so much for their work. If I can be of any help just drop me a line.

If you can make it to my door you deserve candy!

You guys are so kind with all of the advice. Thanks!

I do have about 12 yards of black fabric that I got on clearance. It's not velvet but it is a heavy fabric. I have a really nice sewing machine, too. (I have no idea why "someone" would get me a sewing machine as a gift ... he knows I can't sew! LOL!)

I'll see if I can find the pattern at Walmart. Do folks hire out their sewing services for stuff like this? I know someone who makes curtains and sofa covers ... but she won't do clothing.

Some people do SouthernBelle. I would offer but , with the pile of Sewing I already have in my sewing room it might June before I would be able to get to it. Really thought that pattern is great and if you get stuck on something just email me !
