Inbetween that pink ball of light you see in the picture that has all the arms coming off of it, and the globe - nothing. Just air. I know there's no gases, becuase like I said before, the globe of my other came off, and that would release any gases, and it still works fine. That and the globes are removable, so they can't put any gases in that would escape and prevent it from working once put back together.

Don't they lightly coat metals in phosphor for different reasons? I know it's used in florescent lights and stuff, but I also thought they can coat metals in it too. Maybe that tinfoilish stuff is coated in it. Don't really know much about phosphor though.

I'll have to see if I can figure out how to use the timer on my camera... It looks pretty cool with one giant "arm" shooting straight up at your hand!

That must be it. The thingie I have the arms travel up the glass and glow orangish. Heres a pic What happens if you turn it on without the ball around it, also, have you ever tried touching the pink oprb?

I've always wondered that, but never tried turning it on with out the globe. The only way to touch the pink thing is to have the globe off of it. Not sure I'd wanna mess with it too much, seeing as how it's got enough power coming off of it to turn stuff on and off that's only NEAR it. And I'm sure in it's instructions, which are long gone, it probably mentioned not to do stupid stuff that might electicute you and kill you. That would probably include operating it without the globe and touching stuff. lol... does sound interesting though.

Well, obviously not with the big globe, that could hurt. But the little battery operated or wall wart operated ones. My local museum has a huge one, maybe 2 feet. It would be cool to have one oyu could walk around inside.
