Tammers,
I wanted to do this same thing but, like you, couldn't find anything frightening enough, so I abandoned the idea. This site has three portraits that I was thinking about buying. May be too late though. Good luck!
I checked out that site that Sirus posted and wanted to let you know I have those three portraits. I didnt check the price on that site but if you have a Barts Party Store in your town they sell for about $7.
i decorate our garage like the great room of an
old castle, with fireplace and a chandelier, and such
a few years ago my mother bought this full head devils
mask really really cheap because she thought i could use it
somewhere. No one likes wearing these things so it took me
awhile to figure out what to do with it.
i took a large piece of cardboard and painted it black, attached the mask to it, and painted a gold frame around it. I then cut a hole in the back and put a small light in the mask.
in the dark with the fog machine going, the mask glows bright red, and it looks like a devil coming out at you from the frame. The light that escapes from the holes in the mask shoot out in beams due to the fog.
I've been trying to find other images to make haunted paintings to put on other walls.
I've found a couple of images, but i wanted to do more
so far i have found a few images from disneys haunted mansions, that i have blown up and tile printed on the computer.
on some of the paintings i think i am going to cut hole in the backing, and back light the images so it looks like the eyes are glowing
on others i am going to cut the eyes out of the images and mount them about 3/4 of an inch behind the image
it's supposed to have the effect of the eyes following you.
i'm going to cover the pictures in webs and such
and hang candle holders around them
at least that is the plan.
hmmmm....i wonder if there is some way of using transparencies
and a blinking light to make the images change
You can find some more cool pictures here and here. Another good trick is finding pictures of masks from online catalogs, enlarging them, and then printing them out.
As for changing images, this can be accomplished by taking a normal painting a painting a spooky one over it using glow-in-the-dark paint that dries clear (You should paint the spooky picture with a blacklight or in the dark with an occasional shine from a flashlight for an easier time). Then you can either secretly dim the lights at random times to make the spooky pictures appear or you can use a rotating Christmas color wheel, a black light, and a plexiglass circle with two parts panted black to get a "normal light and then black light" effect to make the images change.
Go to this site. http://members.tripod.com/~Motomom/index-2.html She has several portraits. I used the computer to blow one up printing it on six pieces of paper. Taped it together and stuck on posterboard. Put in old frame and have a great picture of the old man picture. Good luck.
