    Squawkers hack update:
Now that the Halloween dust has settled, I've had time to get back to this project. Just finished the design on an all-in-one controller specifically for hacking Squawkers. The board incorporates the Jemmy Talk circuit for beak sync and the random body control circuit. It also has a built in 3W stereo amplifier with volume control for direct connection to the internal speaker of Squawkers or a small set of external speakers. Best of all, the board operates from a single 8 to 12VDC 1A power supply. I should have these available sometime in Jan 2017. I also have a new method for getting at the wires in Squawkers that is super simple, you don't even need to pull him apart. More to come when I get the new boards built and tested.

I'd be interested in the Squawkers board!

Haven't released these yet, still finalizing a few changes to the board. I switched to powering the board with a single 5VDC 2A supply. The power supply will be included with each board. Still shooting for having these available mid to late January.

Hi J-Man, I have 2 Squawkers I've hoped to use one day in my pirates theme and would be interested in this mod as well. Thanks for figuring this out for us and making it easy. Like the sound of getting to the wiring without taking them apart. Please keep me on a contact list for when it's ready. Happy 2017 and thanks for bringing another great solution to us more electronically challenged folk!

Regarding the birds on eBay the complete set (bird, perch, cracker, remote with packaging) does command a top dollar. For this type of thing though you really just need the bird in working condition. I have seen birds listed with broken feet and if you are setting one up in a crows nest I'm sure you can figure out a way to mount him without relying on the feet/perch since he will be higher up on display and no one would see the feet anyway. Take advantage of the less than perfect birds to keep the cost down. Shipping on these guys tends to quickly up the price in general so great if you can find at yard sales or resale shops but I've yet to get lucky in any of my Goodwills when I'm looking. BTW if you use the "completed or sold" filter on eBay's search (Squawkers McCaw) you can get a feel for what people have listed them for in the past and charged for shipping.

I really like PirateDex's bird set up with him posed on a pirate's chest and gun for a perch substitution. Guessing that the chest makes for a good enclosure for the board and such. Love to see anyone else's set up.

You're spot on with buying from ebay, no need for paying outrageous prices for our purpose. Just a heads up for anyone bidding on one of these right now, if you pull up the sold listings, there's a seller that has sold 5 parrots since Oct. and has another one listed. All of them have the same 3 pictures and description and that seller has no recent feedback. I'd stay clear of that one.

I think everyones birds look great. I think it's cool how there's so many different types of hacks of him. Here's a clip of my squawkers.
