    Default Wiper motor voltage

    Quick question, is it the V that matter or the A? Can I use an adapter that has an output of 12V 5A or does it need to be 5V 5A? Anyone know off the top of their head?

    They both matter,if your motor needs more amperage than the power supply can provide you'll overheat the motor or burn up the power supply. You can't have a power supply that is too big on amperage, the motor will only use what it needs. Voltage is somewhat the same, the lower voltage the motor will run slower and not be as efficient. Most people using the wiper motors do use 5 volts for their props, due to the fact that even on the slowest speed 12 volts is too fast. A 5volt, 5 amp power supply should be fine.

    They both matter. Most wiper motors are designed to run on 12V because thats what your car battery is. You can most likely use lower voltage but the motor will turn slower and at some point it will just stop turning. Also, most wiper motors that I have seen draw between 2 and 5 amps so whatever voltage your are using for your motor you need to have a power supply that can supply at least this much or again, the motor will stall. Also, be aware that if you use less than 12V for the motor voltage you will also reduce the torque of the motor so it won't be able to pull as much. My suggestion is that you find one of the haunt suppliers that has a motor controller that will allow you to adjust the speed of the motor without losing the torque.

    Both are important depending on the application. The voltage will determine how fast the motor will turn, and the amps can help determine the amount of torque / load the motor can produce. As you decrease the voltage the speed will decrease. I prefer to use a transformer with a little less maximum amperage than the motor can tolerate, so I don't over load the motor.

    Just to clarify: You can use a PS with a lot more amps than you need, the motor just won't use them, which is what bfjou812 means.

    Perfect, I think out of all that I got my answer, thanks very much. What's odd is that I could have sworn I bought two power supplies with my motors but over the years... you know how it goes.

    Voltage REALLY matters! If you pump too many volts into a motor, you'll cook it. Amperage is, as stated earlier, taken as it is needed. So, if your power supply can't provide enough amperage, it could overheat and die. Best case, it won't provide enough current and the motor will run slow. But, watch that voltage. If you pump 12 volts into a motor that's expecting 5 volts, it'll run super fast... for a while. But long term, it will probably burn out.

    Wiper motors LOVE 12 volts... it is what they were built to use in most vehicles (there are some exceptions out there). They can run on LOWER voltage (but slower). If you are concerned about a decent power supply, get an old PC power supply. I use these for a LOT of my newer scares, and they haven't let me down. They can provide 12 volts at more than enough amps for even the hungriest wiper motor. And if you need 5 volts, they can produce that, too! They are also usually pretty cheap, small, and the fans in them are nice and quiet. Plus, most have short-circuit protection built in, so if you accidentally short it (or draw too much current) they simply shut down. Pretty much fool proof (I should know!).

    Default Powering a FCG with a 12V wiper motor.

    I have read all the comments in here and they do add clarity to Volts and Amps. I was in Goodwill today trying to find a wall plug PS that could power my wiper motor.

    Question- If I get a 5V 5A PS (like a cell phone charger wall wart) will it work for my FCG. Will it run all night or will it eventually just stop.

    Question 2 - Using a 12V and some other Amp, like 32 A, 15 A etc, with a dimmer type swith inline to reduce the speed....will that work?

    Question 3- If I use a CPU pwer supply, can I wire it to just provide the 5V? Or is it just gonna be 12V?

    I am just starting to build my first FCG and I live in THe Pacific North West where moisture is a real concern.

    Can I get some feedback on these questions and how in the world do I wire said motor?

    BTW- was Garage saling today and came across this motor in th ebottom of a random box and almost yelled YAHOO! 5 bucks!!

    Q1. If your FCG needs 12 V, then 5 will probably barely run it, regardless of how many amps it can produce.
    Q2. No, a dimmer will not work in front of a power supply. I could write paragraphs on why, but the bottom line is... it won't work.
    Q3. A CPU power supply will produce both 5 and 12 Volts, on different wires, so you can choose to use which ever voltage you need/want.
    As for wiring the motor, I put this video up a while ago. It should point you in the right direction.
