I was wanting the asylum door in my house but didn't want to have airlines or a loud pump running so I built this over the weekend for a test to see if it would work. I used solenoids and so far it seems to be working okay. The video playing is from Hi-Rez Designs. The door is also freestanding which means it stands on its on and can fold up to be a total of 8 inches thick for easy storage.

That looks pretty good! Are the solenoids 120V?

Great job Scubaspook!!
Deltagirl, Solenoids can be either electric or air, in fact a air solenoid is usually operated by an electric coil that will shift a spool valve or somr other device to allow air to go to a designated path. If you would look up "solenoid" I'm sure it will give you a better explanation than I have!!__________________________________________________ __________

There are solenoids with a rod attached to it. The rod runs through a coil and when the coil is energized with electric voltage, the coil becomes a magnet and pulls or pushes the rod. Hence, the levers moving the wood out the door. From the video, it looks like the solenoid is pulling the rod and this make the lever push the piece through the door.

Very imaginative solution to using air! If I may, what are you using to trigger the electric solenoids?
