There is a new type of electric fireplace on the market that uses a creative method for their flame effect. What they do is put a vapor mister under the faux wood and, with some lighting, have the mist come up through the wood to look like flame. I think the effect is pretty cool and it's something to experiment with. Just get some simple misters and a lightbulb. The only downside is that this is definitely an indoor (or wind protected) effect.

Wooooooooooooow!
That's cool. Reminds me of that prop that was using a steamer to get that effect. Oh please, please, oh please I hope they make these for prop use soon.

Indeed it does Terra, & if I'd hazzard a guess...I'd say it's exactly the same design. Albeit, with a good deal less powerful heater element. I liked the original better, as this design doesn't have enough pressure to move it realistically. It's a step in the right direction though.
Cool find TK, thanks!

Hmm...Looks like they might be using a fan behind that grate to suck the mist up.

After taking a little closer look, I'd have to revise that initial guess. I'm pretty sure it's an ultrasonic mister that's generating the "vapor", as they refer to it. In their literature, they say that the heat can be turned completely off. Leaving only the flames which is cool to the touch, in the economy mode. For the price I'm seeing advertised, I'd certainly be expecting them to use a more powerful mister than they seem to be.
I agree w/ you Senor Pollo, there's definitely a fan pulling the vapor upwards.
