I've been checking the threads for mould making information because up to this point I have not cast a single prop. However my question is, Has anyone made a Latex mould then tried to cast the final out product out of spray foam in the latex mould? If so how did it work. Did you need a release agent? would you do it again?

    Thanks everyone.

You can do it, in theory, but you'll need a plaster mother mold to keep the expansion from distorting the mold, and you will need a release agent (soap is probably good enough). However, there are expanding foams made specifically for molding and casting that will give you far superior results. Great Stuff is meant to roughly fill a void, not to capture details. Check out Smooth-On.com.

You could do it but the result will suck and likely also collapse on itself like a poorly timed quiche.
casting foams are usually self skinning, great stuff is not so you will need to do a lot of finishing work.
order a smoother on 3lbthe foam sample kit. It will/go a lot further than the great stuff and provide the results you want.

Start- casting will change your life and expand your prop making capabilities.

Yes, many have- you dont see the results because it didnt work.

Try for yourself. Simple experiment- buy a pair of rubber gloves from the dollar store and fill them with spray foam.

I have a youtube channel and I cover a lot of mold making and I just did a silicone caulk mold with a plaster jacket.

Nice work Allen. I've been using the other silicone mold material. This is a lot cheaper to use. I'll have to try this.
    Thanks
