I found a Samsung PWR-12DC-8-5 Techwin Small Enclosed 8 Output 5 Amp 12VDC Power Supply on ebay and was wondering if it would work to supply power to multiple 12v motors. heres the link

Here's the tech specs from Samsung:

    http://www.samsung-security.com/sams...ifications.pdf

From this quote "It will provide 12 VDC via distribution to eight fused
outputs with a total of 5 Amps continuous supply current."
I'm not certain if them mean a total of 5 amps for all 8 outputs or 5 amps for each output. If it's 5 amps for each than you're good for wiper motors, if it's 5 amps total for all 8 outputs then you're just running vent motors with this. I'm thinking they mean the latter.
    Boo!

I think they mean 5 amps total as well. This wont run much of anything. I went to home depot and bought a Outdoor lighting transformer by Malibu,
    1) they are meant to be outside in the elements.
    2) they output a solid 12v
    3) they come in multiple wattage (watts / volts = amps)
    4) They have a built in electro/mechanical timer, IE you can set it so the props or lighting come on at a specified time and shut off for the night at a specified time

I bought the 600w (50amps) on clearance for $29 at the beginning of October, check your local store, they may still have them.
50 amps will power a lot of wiper motors and lighting and vent motors.....

*****I have been told by DD that these are AC supplies and will need to be modified with an ac/dc bridge to make them DC, I have not verified this but is worth noting

Computer power supplies make the best power supplies for DC power. They are cheap if not free, provide 4 different voltages, can easily be converted from computer power supply to normal power supply, and provide lots of amps (especially to the 12v rails). These are great for motors, leds, servos, ect.

untillater - Malibu light transformers are 12v AC and cannot be used on motors. They are only really good for yard lights. And Malibu power supplies are are not regulated so they are only 12volts when there is a load on them (ie: minimum of (5) 3 watt lights) and even then it is not at 12 volts. The bulbs can take up to 14vac before they blow. Leds can be made to work on ac fine but there are a couple of extra steps you have to take. Also you will have a flicker to the leds.

DD, interesting, I went and looked at the box and cracked it open to flip through the booklet to see if it was in fact AC, could not find a single statement in it one way or the other, so thanks for the headsup. though, really it is not that hard to build a ac/dc converter/regulator to add on. Still love the price and weatherproof design.

As to PC power supplies.... aye , they are great, but I would not claim cheap or free, a decent 600w power supply will cost upwards of $90. I just bought a 1200w that cost me $279. The crappy/cheap ones you typically get in manufactured systems are not something I would willing use. I wouldnt power servos with a cheap pos power supply.

As with anything however, to each his own

i tried a couple different pc power supplies with the wiper motor this year and none of what i tried did much to the motor, so i ended up using my old 6/12 volt charger but it wanted to over heat if i ran it to long. figured something like this might work since i want to run more motors this next year. since i have a very tight budget for my props i was looking for a way to power more motors without having to spend 16 to 18 bucks for a wall wart for each

Over heat or get hot? most will get hot but not over heat and shut off unless your motor is pulling more amps than the charger is rated for.

Here's the specs for the first pc power supply in the 2nd picture (the flat one for $5.95)

    Output #1: +3.3V @ 10A #2: +5V @ 15A #3: +12V @ 6A
    #4: -12V @ .4A #5: +5VDCSB @ .25A
Specifications/Features: 75W Max combined +5V & +3.3V. 1U switching supply for Sun Netra(R) equipment. Power ON/STANDBY switch & standard IEC input power connector on back.

You could run 3 wiper motors on 5v and have 5 amp for each...one could draw 7 amps, one 3 amps and another 5 amps...@5vdc this power supply puts out a max of 15 amps.

Or you could run one motor at 12vdc and get a max of 6 amps on output

There's a on/off switch on the end of the unit and you could get 4 units for $23.80 + shipping
