you do not need a large valve when uing a qev.
I just has to pop and release enough holding pressure to permit the fast dump.

You can use any solenoid valve with a dump valve as the solenoid is only used to fill the tank. The dump valve holds the pressure in the tank until till the solenoid valve switches and the pressure into the tank drops. Once the pressure tried to go back to the solenoid the dump valve opens and evacuates the tank very quickly. It's basically a diaphragm in the valve. Gorey is right, for an air blast I go with a smaller opening to get the distance in the air stream. For a cannon you want to go as big as the connection to the tank. No point in putting a 1" valve on a 3/4" opening.

I build alot of Quick exhaust cannons.

You have to use a 3 way solenoid valve to get the proper operation from the Quick exhaust. Although you can get operation out of a 1/2" QEV using only a 1/8" or 1/4" 3 way solenoid, it's best to go bigger if possible. What I have found is that when your operating a 1/2" or 3/4" QEV using only a 1/4" 3 way solenoid, once that solenoid starts to preform less than ideal (after a few seasons), your QEV can occasionally start to hang up. The more flow the better when filling and exhausting the pressure tank, so if you can, go with a 3/8" 3 way solenoid valve to operate your QEV.

I made one year before last... used death lords instructions and it works great. Its pretty loud and produces and pretty big blast of air.
    This is the site...... http://www.creepcrafters.com/AirCann...non/concan.htm

Very simple to make and quick. Most of my time spent was gathering the parts.

If I build it, will they come ?
