I'm planning on building a cemetery fence and gate, and I'm going to order finials soon. I'm considering using one of 2 different fence finials.
This one is called "triad".....
And this one is called "spear"
Both are made of plastic.
I prefer the "triad" style, but my concern is that, even though they're plastic, they're still pointy and a bit sharp, and I'm worried about the possibility of a ToT getting poked or cut by one.
So I'm asking for your opinions; should I go with the "triad" style, or should I play it safe and go with the "spear" style?
Incidently, the "triads" are only one cent more than the "spears", so cost is not a factor.

I have the triad finials on my fence and they ARE sharp. That said, in over 6 years of use, I've never had anyone hurt/injured on them. If someone actually hit their hand down on one I'm sure they could do some damage, but I think common sense prevails (knock on wood). You could also sand or file the points down a bit but it would be rather time consuming. The spear finials are nice too so if you're really worried, go with those.

Out of curiosity, where are you buying the finials from? I would love to get a bunch of these, but they are pretty expensive here if you can find them at all.
I personally prefer the triad look to the spear look, and unless you are going to have a fence that is purposely broken or leaning in the direction of the ToTs, I think the triads would be fine to use. Most people, even kids, do understand that the fences are not for touching, in my experience anyway.Mordessa

I use the triads and they work and look great. If you make the fence high enough, ToTs should not be a problem. I've used them for 4 years w/o any problems.

I also used the triad design from King Architectural Metals this year for my fence. Yes, they are sharp, but even in my high-traffic area I didn't have any problems. My only concern was that a costume could get caught on them as a person walked by, but again, no problems there. I love the look of the triad, they just scream cemetery fence to me.

I'm cutting up 1/4" thick black rubber into arow points, and hot gluing them into the rails. Flexible. Dull. Safe.

I'm ordering from King Architectural as well. I plan on ordering the finials that fit a 5/8" square, and use cpvc pipe instead of regular pvc. The cpvc is a little more expensive, but the finials fit onto it snugly with no modification.Out of curiosity, where are you buying the finials from? I would love to get a bunch of these, but they are pretty expensive here if you can find them at all.
The triads start at 28 cents each, but if you order 500 or more, the price drops to 19 cents each.
The spears start at 22 cents each, but if you order 500 or more, the price drops to 18 cents each.
I'm planning on ordering 500. It's more than I need, but it's better too have to many than too few.
Also, if you go to King Archtectural's facebook page, and click "Like", it will give you a discount code for 25% off your order, effective December 5th til December 9th, so that's why I'm planning on getting them now."Waiter, there's a hair in my soylent green!"

One option instead of trying to file or clip them would be to use an old iron and press the tips against it on medium-high heat to dull them a bit.
