Christmas shopping helped me get my hands on a Luminara candle. This is the one that uses the Disney technology. Here's my video review:
The mechanism is impressive technology. I hear that this candle chews up batteries and this is probably also the reason. I would think this would be better to hack and wire it to be electric instead to save on money. You could also then put it on a timer to save on wear and tear.
The LED light is mounted just to the side of the plastic flame under the lip of the wax. If they could just get a better color LED. Yes, it's better then the orangy glow that most LED candle lights have but that yellow color looks just as fake.
Smart idea to keep it free-moving but stay in place.
The flame is very smooth and shiny white plastic.
Next to the electric pillar candles that I made a tutorial of two years ago: Realistic Electric Flickering Pillar Candles

Thanks again for the review, Terra. That's a really cool effect. I think the flickering flame LED I used on my version of it looks a lot better than theirs, though.

That's great but... it looks like it only works if you see it from one angle? I guess if you have it against a wall it won't make too big a difference but if you put one in the middle of the room it would break the illusion. Also it looks to me like that's a wattaged LED (Cree or generic) and not a basic superbright, which is what would be needed to reach the brightness of a real flame. Which will also eat the battery life.
Hmm, maybe in a few years the Luminara technology (or something close to it) will fit in taper sticks! I just picked up two "Brite Star" taper candles at Walgreens. They have dull warm white LEDs and don't flicker. I want tapers for our wall holders, the standard cylinder ones look weird in them. May have to make my own! I could rewire these with a bulb out of a tealight but not until clearance prices. Back to the drawing board!

You're very welcome. Been drying to see one of these live and thought others would as well. Though you can't see it live I hope I took enough video so you get a good sense of it.
I agree, your's look great.
You know, I never looked at it from the side. Darn, and it's wrapped now. The Luminara website has a picture of tapered candles: http://www.myluminara.com/
