Help please. I am a Mortuary Science student and we were given an assignment to set up a theme funeral. We were given examples of a sports theme where they have perhaps a football, banner or poster depicting their favorite team, and maybe a jersey. Also the themes that are popular are golfing gardening and veterans or military.

My partners (funny but it was not me) decided to do a horror theme as if we were burying George Romero, Wes Craven or John Carpenter. Although I like the idea for my Halloween I am not sure how well it would be received. The grade doesn't come from the idea but how well the theme is presented. So I am thinking of trying to convince my partners to tone it down to just a gothic theme. Either way gothic or horror I am looking for ideas and suggestions on what types of decor and props I could add to the scene to help bring in the feel of someone who loved that genre.

We already are planning black roses, a black cloth as a drape for the casket, and for the horror idea one of the girls wants to bring in movies and display them in the casket's lid. It has been suggested that I bring in a lifesized zombie for a Romero theme but I think that is over the top. I am willing to do it though if that is the way we decide to go.

The project is due on 11/29/11 and we wont see each other until the day of the presentation, we all live fairly far apart, but can email and call.

Please throw out any ideas no matter how wild so I can run them past the crew.

Horror themed, but not over the top. How about a toe pincher coffin, heavy floor-standing candelabras, etc.? Something like shown in gromit05's album. Lower than normal lighting and some haunting organ music would help complete the ambiance. Heck, I'd go for that at my funeral.

I was thinking along those lines myself. We have to use the caskets or urns the school has but there are about 20 to choose from.
Thanks for the link it helps to see the pic.

That would be cool. The only problem I would have is I have nothing to use for props . I might be able to do a VooDoo theme though.HMMMMM.

hey, i was Mortuary Science major for a year, before i become obsessed with psychology and changed. i am sure you know this, but always occasionly check CL, i found 2 lamps, you know the ones that usally sit on each side of a casket at a funeral home on craigslist for 25.00 for the set, though the do look a bit morbid in my room, i have room deticated to horror and am a fan, but they are a little over the edge, good conversation pieces
    anyway good luck

When you say display movies on the lid of the casket, do you mean project old horror movies onto the casket silk (muted of course?) 'Cause that would be "off the hook!"

for Gothic go with blood red curtains, stone walls, black roses, and a lick black almost piano like finish on the coffin or casket, which is of course upholstered in rich red fabric. Think Dracula and vampire lairs. Black and blood red are the colors to go with
