    Looking for Molds

    Hello All,

I hope everyone had a great Halloween in 2011. I'm relatively new to the forum (this is my first post). I've been basically cherry picking from everyone else's projects. I must say everyone in here does a fantastic job with explaining procedures, providing diagrams, etc. and all your haunts look great.

Now the real reason I'm posting... I'm going to try my hand at designing some of my own tombstones. I'd like to get a headstart on my prop making before next Halloween (only 356 days to go). Does anyone know of any good sites where I can get small molds (skulls, skeletons, bats, angels, etc.)?

    Thanks for the info.

When hell is full, the dead shall walk the earth.

Depending on how detailed you need, you may try the Wilton brand silicone molds. The kind you bake cookies and muffins in. You can usually get them from the craft stores, or online. You may still find some Halloween or fall themed molds that way. If your thinking of doing plaster, silicone molds would be good.

Candy molds work well too. The kind that you put melted chocolate into. It depends on what you are casting in the mold too. Plaster, foam, ???...

Oh and Welcome to posting on the forum I see you joined in 2010.

You could also use stencils depending on what you want. If you look at the pic in my album of the Hearse (my avatar) all the gold accents are drywall joint compound smeared over a stencil then you remove the stencil and you get a raised version of the stencil image. You can get a fairly thick design depending on how thick of a coat of the compound you smeared. Then you can paint it if you want it to show up more. I sprayed a spray adhesive on the back side of the stencil so it stayed in place while I spread the joint compound then I just peeled the stencil off, cleaned the stencil up and moved on to the next spot.

    Hope this makes sense.

The foam insulation from a hardware store is your best friend! You can make all sorts of grave stones with it.

If you go right now to Walmart you might be able to find those white skull molds in the Halloween clearance. They are made for jello I think but work great with paper mache clay. They are $1 a piece, reusable with the paper mache, no release agent needed. I have 7 of them and they are really easy to get started with.

Don't forget to look at any packaging before you toss it. Someone once posted how the bottom of a Hostess cupcake package was filled with plaster and used as rosettes for his stones.
I learned also that mixing silicone caulk and a little craft paint can be used to pour decorations but whew does it stink and you have to be quick because it hardens fast!

The dollar stores have great things for projects. Just add a little creativity!
