This gets used a lot in our garage. I built it with plywood and a lamp dimmer, guitar string and mounted a guitar tuning knob assembly for getting the correct tension. Once you have the tension right, strings will last and last.

I re-purposed and made some new tombstones this year and my most used tool was a Dremel type rotary tool (mine has flex shaft), and then a rasp or styrofoam shaver, I also used our heat gun quite a bit.
What I am going to need is your standard flame thrower...

I'll only be using this Stahl for tombstones. All my electrical work is with my good solder equipmentses. If I can get this Stahl just warm enough to melt foam without burning it, VICTORY
That it should do quite nicely. I'd bought this one while I was waiting on parts for my Hakko when it failed. My main station is a Hakko FX951-66, but I'd never ever...ever use that for foam or wood burning. The only argument I have over the Stahl, is that I had to add a little more insulation around the sleeve if your using it for an extended duration. Otherwise, it's pretty damn nice considering it's price/performance!

Ah yes, I've been wanting to make one myself. I just have to get around to it at some point. I hate the mess saws (and even Dremels) make cutting foam, even with a Shopvac attached to their exhaust... :s
