This year I went back to the old Pirate theme ( time to bury that theme for another half dozen years )and recycled my treasure chest prop madeyears ago from a foam cooler. The last time I used poker chips I had laying around and painted them gold to make a treasure. This year I wanted a more of a hand stamped gold pieces. I used a key chain I had of the Aztec Gold from Pirates of the Caribbean. I made a mold from clay that you bake and mass produced a lot of coins from crayola model magic. layed them out so it looked full and dry brushed each coin. but since the detail was so unnoticeable I ended up spray painting the whole lot gold but I think it came out pretty good. The "second" photo is the old version. The last is the pirate in charge of this years treasure

I like the dry brushed effect but I agree the details would n't be noticed. It is a major improvement though.
Fantastic!

That is a really fabulous idea! I love it and it looks great. Using a foam cooler is a brillian idea. Also, it was inspiring to see the coins, those could actually be used as novelties to pass out for TOTers and the year could be stamped on them. LOVE it! Thanks for sharing it.

Well done - love the treasure box (I know someone also used a cooler to make tombstones, so this is another great recycle idea). Those coins looked ~really good!

If you want a more perfected look for the coins, spray them all gold first, then get some latex gloves on, dip your fingertips into black or dark green paint, and rub every coin to get the paint into the cavities and low spots of each coin. Make those dirty deposits deep into the design of the coins.

The undead pirate protecting his booty is a perfect setup and display! I really dig these pirate themed props!
I had plans for a pallet wood coffin...
...now I think I wanna try a pallet wood treasure chest!!! I bet only two pallets would be needed for a really BIG treasure chest.... hmmm....
