Already thinking about next year. Might move/expand the haunt to the garage. Thinking it might be interesting to use a rear projection screen as a backdrop for a scene. Probably need to invest in a short throw projector. Lots of possibilities, not sure what the theme would be. Something in the distance like Mordor or the Eye of Sauron. Maybe a vast subterranean cavern with vaguely monstrous shapes lurking in the distant shadows. I could use 5.1 sound to enhance the effect and it would be a pretty controlled environment as far as wind/weather.

Have any of you tried this in a home haunt? I haven't been to any pro haunts; do they use rear projection for scenes?

Yes, we're doing a rear projection on a D-shaped screen made of heavy "clear" plastic dropcloth tethered to a PVC frame inside one of our home's front windows this year. I'm using a short throw projector for creating flames, and in front of that is a demon manequin and other parts of a scene from Hell. Could have gotten away without using a short throw projector if our room was just another foot deeper. We're still trying to set up our haunt and have no photos, but the effect is great. If you're interested, PM me after Halloween and I can provide photos and other info. But the concept really offers alot of flexibility in making your scene come to life.

I believe there is a website that sells projection backdrops specifically for what you want to do. I don't recall it right off the bat (sorry).

This is the first year I am using projections as well. I am using Hallowindows for a window that is next to my Magic Mirror setup.

@jukinggeo: Yeah, I'm doing Hallowindows for the first time this year, too. It just got me thinking.

@DD: I'll PM you later. I'd like to see how that turns out.

Sounds good, we should have video of it by then. BTW, we're using the Fire! video from Hallowindows for the flame projection, but edited to play in a loop and avoid the initial few seconds where the flames are off and then start burning.

I use the Hallowindows rising ghosts for a rear projection back drop to my cemetery. My backyard wooden privacy fence is behind the cemetery setup, I just replace the gates with a special-built frame that houses a shower curtain screen and project the dvd from the back.

Vidscenes and motionloops have some great ambient backgrounds! Search this forum for projections to see a thread I started listing a dozen or so sites for Halloween Projections
