I've had a quart jar of eyeballs for the Mad Science Lab for a couple of years, but my son had a great idea to improve it. Switch to a gallon jar, and stick an aquarium air hose in the bottom. The eyeballs in the water get circulated up and around the jar from the bubbling action. We also put a color changing LED light source under it.
Basic recipe:
- 1 bag ping pong eyeballs from Spirit: $3.99, Drill a tiny hole front and back in each eyeball, so they fill with water, which makes them neutrally buoyant.
- 1 gallon jar
- aquarium air pump and length of hose
- something heavy to weight down the end of the hose. (and a rubber band to clip it to the end of the hose)
- light source.
Incredibly simple, but great effect: suddenly much bigger prop, plus light, motion, and bubbling sound. The eyeballs are cartoonish enough to not gross anybody out too much.
Happy Halloween!
