I really didn't feel like doing anything this year since the number of kids showing up at our door has been ridiculously low.
That said, I couldn't help myself, and got this $14 spider, ran some 50lbs fishing line ($3 @ WalMart) all over the roof (using a fabric soaker hose to provide smooth gliding), through the backdoor, back into the house, where I will pull the string to control the movement. I am pretty happy with the results.
If the feedback is positive (meaning, lots of screams), then I will replace it with a bigger spider next year, which is more animated, and can shoot something at the kids.

Just wanted to share this in case you wanted to do something quick and cheap.

Thanks! I used a 1.25" discharge hose at first, but it was so heavy it pinched the wire and nothing would move. Almost gave up, but realized I had this soaker hose from Harbor Freight, which is flat, and made out of nylon. Since it that hose didn't work well for me (kinks too easy), decided to remove the inner plastic tube, and run the fishing line through that. Worked really well.
