This is our 5th year doing a haunt, and every single year we've had our styrofoam tombstones and cemetery columns up outside. Suddenly, this year, the birds are eating all my styrofoam props! What gives? Anybody know why they are doing this? My whole cemetery is filled with big blotches of white styrofoam where there used to be paint.![]()
They are also eating the polyfoam boards that I have covering the windows.
I doubt there is any way to prevent this, but if anybody knows a way, short of endangering the lives of the wildlife, I would love to hear it!![]()

Birds seem to hate CD's hanging from string. The reflection spooks them out for some reason. Hang these around the tombs and windows and they shouldn't come around again. Of course it doesn't always work but worth a try.

I doubt they're eating it. More likely they've discovered it makes great insulation for their nests and they're ripping it up to renovate their homes for the winter.

What kind of birds?
I discovered that some birds like the smell of linseed oil...so, my linseed oil based stains were a natural "buffet" sign to them...
Pepper won't work. They put pepper in bird seed because it doesn't bother birds, but keeps squirrels away.Last edited by UnOrthodOx; 10-24-2011 at 05:55 AM.

I've had the same problem in the past. I just repaint as they continue to do damage. It adds a dilapidated look to it.

Put some poison down, all the dead birds will add to the atmosphere.
Just Kidding!
Tie two aluminum pans of a different size close to one another so when there is a breeze the will make an clanging noise. Also try an Owl Decoy - we used one so that the birds would stop using the pool as a bird bath.

I am experiencing the same thing this year!!! I never had a problem before. Now they're eating my columns. I don't think its birds tho. I think its squirrels. I also think they're making nests with the foam. I don't know what to do about it either!!!!!

lol Cyclone!

I just find it really bizarre that this is happening all of the sudden when it's never happened before! lol I know it's birds though, because I've been watching them take little pieces of my props, can't tell what they are doing with them, just know they are destroying my tombstones and I'm all out of grey paint to touch them up with this year. lol
Oh well, I'm giving the graveyard an overhaul next year anyway, so, maybe I'll mix some cayenne pepper into the paint when I touch up the tombstones then.
Just baffling though...Mordessa
