(Sorry for the typo in the header!)
Our local Lions Club does an annual Haunted Hayride and Haunted Barn. This year they were trying out Chromadepth effects. The dark hallways have flourescent masks that seem to float at different depths, stripes and other simple effects. I was not able to assist with the barn this year, but I did manage to try painting my first ever 3-D Chromadepth illusion last night for them.
I was inspired by Terra's awesome 3-D haunt and "benchmarked" her bottomless pit effect. Yes, "benchmarked" refers to blatantly using her idea. This is a 4' x 8' bottomless pit. The Hayride and Barn open tonight, so this is a last minute addition. I did this last night and didn't have time to do a test first, so this is literally my first attempt at 3-D painting. You need Chromadepth glasses to get the full effect. Photos were taken with my phone, so I appologize for the poor quality shots.
Thanks again for the inspiration Terra!

You might need the glasses to fully appreciate the effect but I'll tell you that on my iPad, it looks pretty 3D to me. Nice painting job. I love how you finished the jagged edges of the pit and sense the thickness of the "floor" before it drops down.

That looks kick butt! In fact, you've got the layering better than mine. That perspective stuff is tough to figure out, heh. Drinking wine at the time may have something to do with it

Terra, Thank you, that is quite a compliment! I was happy with my first attempt at 3-D painting. Unfortunately,
I wasn't drinking anything at the time, but painting while wearing the chromadepth glasses under black light was a really freaky experience. I did the base coat without the glasses, but put them on and used the black light for painting the rest.
Your work was a true inspiration and gave me the courage to try this concept out. It is a lot of fun!
Thanks for all you do to help inspire the rest of us.

This was a last minute request from my friend and I didn't have time to order specialty paints. I literally started this at 7:30 last night and finished by 9:30. The hayride opens today. I used flat black latex as the base coat, then made some simple cardboard stencils and flourescent green spray paint for the base of the jagged edges. I didn't like the amount of overspray onto the black, so I repainted the black and used my daughters flourescent poster paints for everything else (yellow, blue and red). When everything was dry, I applied two coats of clear acrylic sealer over everything. This is on a 4'x8' sheet of masonite and will be walked on. The sealer was needed to prevent wear on the paint and so it could be wiped down with a damp towel to get rid of dusty footprints from the thousands of people that will be walking on it over the next two weeks.
This was a fun project. It is really a wild experience painting under black light conditions while wearing chromadepth glasses. It probably is not necessary once you get experience with what effects work best, but for my first try it really helped. It is amazing how much apparent depth there is between paint layers.I dream of a better world, where chickens may cross a road without their motives being questioned.

Beautiful work! I did half my garage haunt in chromadepth last year (thanks to Terra's tutorials) and it was the hit of the haunt. I expanded this year to include the entire walkthrough. It's so nice to be 10 days from Halloween and have my entire garage ready for the big night.

Wow! It looks 3-D to me, even without glasses!
Nice paint work!
