Okay, so here's the sort of build thread for my coffin prop.
I got the plans/idea from this site: http://www.scarefx.com/project_coffin_2.html
The plans says it will cost 25 bucks, but not so much anymore. I got the picket fence boards at Lowes for $1.48 each. In all, I purchased 17 picket fence boards, a box of 1" wood screws and a tube of Liquid Nails. It probably all cost me a bit under $ 35 bucks. I guess that's not too bad.
The pickets were already pre-stained. I think it makes it look kinda cool. It took me longer than I thought it would, but I think if I make another it would go by much easier.
Okay, so I skipped a few steps in the picture taking.
Now to hinge the lid and animate it. I'm still debating on how I'm going to do that.
Note: There are gaps between the boards because of how the boards dried out. This is a good thing. It looks cool when there's a red light inside and light shines through the gaps. Makes it eerie.

Might I suggest a windshield wiper motor... lots of power and virtually silent. It would be fairly simple to hook up a simple linkage on the inside of the lid, close to the side so it's not too visible.

I Keeel YOU!
I did think about using a wiper motor, but I like the idea of the "double-acting" cylinder better because I can control how long it stays open and shut. Also, I was thinking of getting the PicoBoo controller, unless someone else has a better idea. That PicoBoo seems to be pretty sweet for what it does. Not cheap though.

You can use it to control your props:

Sort of expensive, but seems pretty cool.
