I'm already thinking about Halloween 2012 and I'm thinking of adding a talking skull to my haunt. I really dont want to mess with DMX or needing to have a computer to run the thing. From what I can tell, I have two options -- the Scary Terry/Cowalicious skull or the Frightprops/Frightideas skull.

Scary Terry is a lot cheaper but there seemed to be a high pitched noise squeaking noise whenever the mouth moved in the video I saw (and it this seemed to be squeaking from the servo itself rather than from some trigger noise).

Frightprops is a lot more expensive but I really like their elegant and idiotproof PicoBoo products and would be willing to pay extra money for a similarly idiotproof solution for a talking skull. However their products are scarce, and I'm not sure how well their sound / jaw syncing works.

Can anybody help me with a pro/con of these two options, or is there a third that I haven't thought of?

I never used the ST/Cow skull, but did use the FI/FP one. It is very easy to work with. I do perfer the the enclosed setup of the picovolt and Bootunes rather then an open circuit board. It is very easy to open and have the volt encased in the skull.

I am not sure if the Cow board comes with MP3 sound but the Bootunes handles plenty of sounds and routines to follow. Since it syncs to voice it works really well. Sure it isn't a Skulltronics skull but for that price you can keep people entertained all night. Even revisits. For the price you can get the 2 combo package and have them talk back and forth.

I see no reason to add this product to your haunt next year. It is fun to work with and really easy. When you are done you can step back and say, "That's it"?

You can actually buy all of the parts for the Frightideas one at http://Boneyardbargains.ca I just bought everything and it saves you a little money building it yourself. It wasn't very hard either. PM me if you need directions on how to put it together and I will see if I can help. Also, make sure you buy the picotalk with the 2 servo controller not the one. I wasted $60 screwing that one up! At least now I can make another talking prop next year.
