I found out the hard way that Model Magic doesn't hold up to the elements well. I made some skeleton hands out of hanger wire and Model Magic. Washed them with some paint to give it an aged look and used them for my grave grabber prop. The rain came and about washed them away! Fortunately, my daughter saw that the paint was being washed away and moved the prop so the hands were under a bush. When I checked it yesterday, I was surprised to find that not only was the paint washing away, but the actual Model Magic was being washed away as well! Fortunately, they still look fine and are able to be used. I think I have my daughter to thank for that!

Obviously, I need to seal them, but I'm now wondering if that will solve the probelm or not. Has anyone else used Model Magic for their outdoor prop and have the same problem? If so, did sealing it work?

I would expect that spar will do the job, if it can protect paper mache it should do the same for clay.

All I Use for the hands is model magic. if they are not totally dry, they will re-consitute. I paint mine and then apply a sealer to them to help keep them dry. Last year here in NY it rained and or misted all day and night, mine came through with no problems.

I agree with Beacon, Model Magic takes a little longer to set than they say imo, and before that time they will be susceptible to the elements... Bearing that, even some cheap water-proofing sprays would likely work fine for the setting period.
