I have been working on a new prop to go on top of the overhang above my front door for about a month now. It took planning and a lot of work to build this guy and I was totally looking forward to putting him up this weekend. However, when I first sculpted the face, I wasn't all that happy with it, but hubby and friends said it was great and I should leave it, so I left it, figuring painting it would make it better. (Paint always seems to make the sculpts I'm not happy with much better, so I figured that would be the case with this guy too.)
But now, I've just finished painting his face... and I think he looks horrible, and not in a good way. I'm not pleased with the face at all, but my hubby says I'm being over critical. I tried every paint technique I could think of to make the prop appealing to me, but I just couldn't manage it. So, since I don't know if my hubby is just placating me or not, I'm going to ask you guys for an honest opinion on the prop.
The theme this year is zombies and he's going to be dressed in rags, but I haven't done the accent painting on the rest of the body yet as I wanted to get the face done first to have an idea of how to do the rest. Anyway, here is what he looks like at the moment:
What do you guys think? Should I use the prop at all? Am I being over critical? Should I try repainting? Should I use a mask? Should I maybe put a hoodie or robe or cowl type thing on him and use him as he is where his face is kinda concealed? LOL
I really need some objective opinions!
Thanks

I should probably not even comment since I dislike the zombie craze to begin with, but........ it looks like a pretty damned good zombie to me. I mean, as far as zombies go, I guess.
In my opinion, and I'm not just 'being nice' here either cuz if I don't like something I usually don't comment, in fact I'm home from work sick as a dog and quite grumpy so you're getting a hell of a deal right now
, IN MY OPINION I think the paint work looks very good. It has great depth and color, the eyes are excellent, the proportions are great.
I can't make out what is going on with the rest of the body, but his/her head looks very nice. If you're into zombies that is, and apparently you are. Go with it.

I'm the opposite of GhostTown I've been a huge zombie fan long before the "craze" hit a few years ago. That being said I love it, the paint is great the colors are good and gives great depth. I like the yellowed eyes add a lot to the creepy effect. I say go with it, you put this much time and effort into it, see the project through to the end. The end product always looks much better and as we all know we are own worst critic.

You are being waaaay to critical of your work. Sure, it may not be your best work, but the TOTers aren't going to know that. They are just gonna see the big ugly dude above the door. You can always re-purpose or recycle it next year
Undead and loving it!

I actually think the face looks pretty good as well, nice rotty bits, some blood, yup looks zombie like to me?? I would suggest two things, make his teeth more grimy and possibly try adding clear gloss to the bloody, rotten parts. IMO zombies should have some "oozy" looking bits. Also, try setting him up in the same lighting conditions he will be used in, sometimes I look at my props and I think is it too much?? Not enough??? So I try to reproduce the lighting effect for viewing, and that changes everything. It is likely just right!
What I am going to need is your standard flame thrower...

There's a zombie craze? OK, I didn't know that. I just thought it was part of Halloween. I should get out more.
ANYWAY, I think it looks great. I'm always my own worst critic too so I understand. Plus, it always seems I'm disappointed in the props that I spend a lot of planning time on. They just never measure up to what I envision.
Use it! I'm sure you'll get a lot of positive feedback on it.Dear Sweet Leota, Beloved By All. In Regions Beyond Now But Having a Ball...
