    You can do the same cheaper with inexpensive 9V batteries. Coin cells cost and you can get a better connection using the 9V batts, specially if you salvage a connector.

    I'm not very knowledgeable about electronics and electricity. What would it take to run a string of these on a power cord connected to an outlet?

    That would take a little doing. You would need to get a transformer (probably one of those that plugs into the wall) that outputs approx 3 volts DC but that also could provide enough current to drive all of your LED's. There's probably one out there that you could buy off of the shelf somewhere.

    You can use any "brick", DC supply, but you have to know the voltage drop and resistance you need to add in series with your string of LED's. Google it or here a quick primer on LED's.
