Looking for a single kick-butt speaker for props. Don't need stereo speaker sets though. Just a single powerful one would be optimal. Been using the Behringer MS-16 stereo speaker set (great speakers) but need another prop speaker so started looking for a single speaker made by Behringer. Found this one: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-a...monitor-single
This is a professional speaker and without hearing it - not sure this is a good choice. Have you heard it or is there better choice? I want a very powerful yet single and small (12" tall - at most) speaker that isn't killer in price. This one lists for $140 and seems to be an awesome speaker but is pricey and perhaps overkill?
Anyways, advice and - even better - if you already have one... what do you think?

Hi Terra. Well, I have two in my recording studio- for stereo monitoring. I like them a bunch. They really are cheap enough to buy two, but I understand what you're saying. These speakers are plenty loud. You'll get very good sound and it will be seriously loud if you need it. I think it would be overkill for a prop speaker unless it's an outdoor prop, where sound tends to die out quick from smaller speakers. Indoors, you would probably get away with a stereo set of smaller speakers. This speaker will deliver soft to loud volume with good bass response as well. But be careful with just mono speakers. A stereo sound track will lose a whole bunch of stereo information when listening through one speaker- mono. If you have good stereo prop soundtracks for an indoor prop, it would be better to get a smaller set of stereo speakers. These Berry's are good speakers, but for prop sound tracks at moderate volumes, they can be equaled, perhaps even bested, with a smaller stereo pair of something else that's still gives the volume you want. Good luck.

I can't say that I am familiar with that particular model. But I do have a lot of experience in studio monitors that size. I've often though about using some I have lying around. But, I wouldn't really recommend purchasing a studio monitor for this kind of thing. I know that you don't really skimp on anything you do, but I think these might be overkill. However, possibly in an application like a 3-Axis skull, talking busts, or other props that have somewhat of a dialog or soundtrack it would work great. But for most things, you are probably better off, for your money, with powered desktop speakers. Or if you want higher quality then that, get a pair of powered 3-4" studio monitors that you can pick up for around $75 for the pair, behringer, sampson, tascam and many others all have products in that range.
Either run both of the speakers next to each other, or just run one, and store, toss or re-purpose the other one.

Thank you so much Shockwave and Redsand! That's great advice about losing the stereo aspect of the sound. Let me explain more how I use prop speakers and ask again if it's still a good speaker for the task:
Normally all my props' sounds are mono. I run sound files through DMXorcist and those files are first changed to be mono and then they are directed to be certain channels of the 7.1 sound that comes out of the computer. So, one prop would use the front right channel, another prop would use front left and so forth. Because floor space is premium behind props the stereo speakers take up a bit much of it and the extra wires been bugging me (guess I could just stack them though). I love my Behringer MS-16's which are powered desktop speakers. Also have a Behringer B212D for the outside lightning in the graveyard. So, that's why I've been searching Behringer's stables for a kick-butt single mono speaker.
So, would the Behringer Truth B1030A be the next step up from the MS-16's? It did seem to be overkill but I didn't see one that was smaller than the Truth B1030A but larger than the MS-16's. Willing to look at another brand though.

Hey Terra,
I was looking a speakers for my yard and came across these: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mutant-Wireless-Outdoor-Stereo-Speakers-MIG-WS2-S/12961526
These are probably way below the quality and power you are looking for, but you get two, they are wireless and it states that they are able to take a bit of water on them. I do not own them and have only read what is on the site.Who says it's not smart to be putting props on the roof at midnight?

For that 7.1 setup, which mono speakers are you using now with your props? Or is this a new thing you want to try like that? The Truth monitor will absolutely be a step up from any pc speaker you have at the moment. It will playback your sound track well at moderate volumes, or be a serious grabber at loud volumes for more grandios props that need louder sound to match larger theatrics. It's versatile in that respect because after all, it's an 8" [whoofer] monitor. But it's a chunk of change for one. Unless I needed that kind of power and that size speaker, I wouldn't spend that much on one speaker in a prop track role. I've never heard this one, but you could think about something like this-
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-a...e-monitor-2010
That would probably deliver good sound for less. When you get into studio reference monitors such as the size of the Truths, they will be a step up from pc desktop type monitors. But I'd still look for sales or cheap ones and I'd consider carefully whether I need to spend that much money for a mono prop monitor, regardless of sound.

Dan, that looks like a GREAT speaker. Good size and the price is more in line with what I was thinking. Plus, it's a Mackie! Think I'll pull the trigger on that one and see how it goes. I'll report in with how it sounds. Thanks so much

By the way, the speakers I'm using now run the gamut. One is the MS-16's, one is some old powered computer speakers, one is a another old powered computer speaker set with a small subwoofer (!) and lastly one is a small Ibanez amp. heheh. Trying to get this simpler and better sounding

Those look like a great option for an an outdoor use. The speaker I was looking for is for indoor props (garage haunt) though. But an excellent option for people with outdoor props that need a speaker for sure.
UGH! Tried it but no worky. Seems Mackie doesn't like to participate in coupons at Musician's Friend. I went ahead and ordered it anyway. It's free shipping and I usually get get in one day - 'cause they are in KC!

Took video of sound comparisions between the new Mackie (thanks Shockwave!) and the old sets of speakers that I currently use with props. Please ignore the hair - was out in the wind and forgot to brush it. I look like a mad scientist!
