I am looking for some ideas for how to finish my Spider nest scene.
I have a cocooned body hanging, a jumping spider(from spirit) and a number of larger and small spiders that look like the jumping spider (found them at iParty). I am planning to add bones and body parts on the ground. And that is where I have my problem. I have a L-shaped ledge that the jumping spider sits on that I want to cover alone with the floor in this area. I want something that will look like dirt floor that will be easy and cheap to do. I was thinking a blanket but that looks really fake. Anybody have any idea what can be used to look like a cave floor?
Ulfric, i'd consider using masonite board cut to fit your area. First of all it's cheap, brown in color and the rougher side would make a great surface (non-slippery) for the ToTers to walk on. I'd put the smoother side down on the floor and if you needed to add some of that anti-slip rug undermatting that they sell to prevent small area rugs from moving on the floor, you could do so inexpensively but you could probably use a duct tape too depending on what the flooring is. I know that artists have used masonite to paint pictures on (suspect they use the smooth side however), but i would think the rougher side would accept a spray paint and you could create footprints, leaves, grass or water with the paint depending on your spider cave scene. Given it has a sort of rough texture, spider webbing should adhere well to it when connecting it from the wall to the floor. Pick up some of those faux fall leaves or vine garland from a craft store like Michaels to add to the cave-like effect but keep them out of the walking path so someone doesn't slip on them in the dark.
Home Depot, Lowes, etc should carry the masonite board in fairly large sheets.
If it wont be walked on but will be part of the background of your prop, then using wrinkled up paper can look like a cave wall or floor. You can buy rolls of brown butcher paper or craft paper online.
