So I am thinking of using a windshield wiper motor with some fishing line attached to branches in the hedge to simulate something running behind them.
Do you think I can achieve this with one motor and different lengths of line tied to the branches in succession?
Need something to add to the haunt.
Thanks for reading!

Well I have yet to do anything mechanical and I'm just starting out (so I'm no help lol) but I wanted to say that I think this would be such a cool effect if you can achieve it. I'm sure one of the gurus here will stop by the help you out with it. Best of luck to you

items needed. 1 4x4x6 2 small pullys double the length of the hedge length of string.

i see where glug is going with this, you are going to need to use the motor to spin the pully...otherwise the trick will work once and only once. I do like the idea of something in the bushes though...a really good ambient affect.
when you doo hook this up you are going to need to tie a few knots or something in the string, you are going to need it to catch on the branches when it goes around and I think if it is just string then it will pass through the bushes with minimal sound...perhaps tying a few extra lengths of string as tethers, or tails of some sort so that they snag up a bit when traveling through the hedge...
good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Basically something like an axworthy ghost set up with something attached to the line that rustles the headge as it passes could do this trick.

Just to add to the complexity, I want to have a stereo sound effect as well.
Someting like kids giggling paning from left to right behind the hedge.
I found some great info on the 11.00 USB MP3 recorder http://www.electronics123.com/s.nl/it.A/id.2841/.f
And here too. http://www.trainelectronics.com/MP3_USB/Scaring the crap out of people since 1993.

Going to the junk yard tomorrow to look for windshield motors.
I know how I am doing the audio.
I am liking the idea of the axworthy idea, yardhauntjunkie. Me thinks if the base of the motor is attached to a 2x12x(length of hedge), then attach motor to the center of the 2x12. Have a pair of vertical 2x4' about 1' tall attached to either end of the 2x12. Add a spring at each 2x4 at the top and have at each end of each spring a pulley. I would wrap a chord around the motors drive shaft pulley and route the balance of the chord around each pulley at the 2x4's.
I assume this would create an infinity loop. Now to attach a piece of fixable plastic to the string and have it run across the trunks of the hedge similar to how I used to run a card in my bicycle wheel.
Hmmm, now that I have put this all down on "paper" I see some issues.
Down but not for the count on this one guys.Scaring the crap out of people since 1993.

How large is the hedge? A simpler way would be to put an arm (or even a couple of arms) on the motor and run a string from the end of the arm to a branch in the hedge. I'm thinking along the lines of a flying crank ghost.

Screaming Demons
The one section of hedge is roughly 12' long & 3.5' tall, the second is 8' wide x 4' tall.
I need the hedge to rustle from left to right to match the audio effect of something moving pat you behind the hedge.Scaring the crap out of people since 1993.

Hmmm, methinks this might be a good idea to use a garage door opener motor on. You can get them from Surplus Center for about $10, you would need a odd pitched chain to work with it (41 pitch which you can get in 10' lengths from American Science & Surplus for $11.95 per length with the master link- 2 needed for your particular run) which would be much more rigid than any rope/line w/ pulley set up you could think of.
