Hi guys and gals,
i bought some of those famous black vent motors, and i have seen some linkage's and i am having trouble getting to work proper.
what i'm trying to do is have one work the arm movement into a stabbing action, and the other for head movement turning side to side.
is there a special way that the linkage has to be loose or tight? any help is much apreciated!
Thanks

is there a video somewhere that shows how tight or loose the linkages must be?

i don't have any pictures but I think there is a tutorial about using those motors in that section of the forum. I used flat aluminum bar stock that is bolted to the motor tightly and then a looser connection (drilled hole slightly larger then bolt diameter and washer added between aluminum flat stock) on other end of linkage. One note of caution if it will be outside a had two fail from water getting in and corroding everything inside. Another worked fine with no problems but it is orientated differently.

The linkage that attaches to the motor must be tight at that connection - preferably clamped via lockwashers, etc.. This is the one that drives everything else. All other linkage conections must be able to freely rotate about their connection. If you can provide more details on what the trouble is, have a sketch of the mechanism you're making with each connections labelled (1,2,3, or A,B,C, etc.), and photos too, more people would probably chime in and help debug.

As rnmully posted, the linkage (the crank arm) must be tightly bolted to the motor shaft and able to move freely at the other joints. I use 1/4-20 bolts and nylon insert jam nuts to set the loose joint clearances. These nuts stay where you put them and will not loosen or tighten as the linkage rotates. Take a look at this video of a rocking chair linkage. Note that the secondary link is able to move without any binding. The nylon jam nuts make this easy to do. Please post pics of your setup, if possible.
