I know I might get blasted for this BUT can you spray a light color of paint over a clear bulb if you can not find the color your looking for or will it over heat?

bulb will over heat....probably smoke and smell....this sounds like a fire waiting to happen.

I actually did this a couple years ago but with glass paint I bought from a local craft store...heat wasn't a issue...worked fine

Yeah, the glass of the bulb itself doesn't need "ventilation" so if you use glass/ceramic paint that you need to bake to harden anyway it should be just fine. Just as long as you don't get paint in the ballast mechanism if you're using a CFL bulb. But Home Depot should have many colors of CFL (fluorescent "twisty" bulbs) anyway.
If you mean LED bulbs, then you're probably better off making a spotlight and putting a color gel in front of it for the "lens". Stage lighting gels are designed for high heat (but not direct bulb contact)
