Hey boys and ghouls,
i put alot of time into my tombstones and am wondering if theres a spray sealant i can spray over the coats to seal it from rain and what not. some of my tombstones are the weatherd paint ones that get runny with water spray and gets that drip down from the letters for aging effects. I want to make sure when i stick them out there the paint wont loosen up and drip right off.!
Thanks,
Chris

I used drylock concrete sealer/paint. It gives a grainy stone texture and can be bought in a light grey stone color. 2 coats and you are fully waterproof. This is before the weathered paint step though. after that, you can use a matte sealent.

I use different types, just to see what they do. The "stone" paint has a special sealent that works really well. You can also checkout the spray paint aisle, there are several types there that work really well. They have gloss, matte and flat. Just "Test" it on something first and beware that any unpainted sections will melt due to the acrtone in the spray.

Driveway clear sealer ( brush on ) is great too, comes in gloss & natural (flat) stone finish. Is very durable, has UV in it,....if it lives p to the harsh traffic of feet & cars......
I use it to reseal surfboards after I airbrush graphics on them & they hold up to the abuse for quite some time !! My props I've sealed with it have held up great, even though I don't get rain that time of year yet, but the dewy morning can be just as bad.......When you look in the mirror at midnight,....what looks back at you.........

At Home Depot, in the paint section, you can get a spray can of Helmsman Spar Urethane by Minwax. It's basically an exterior polyurethane. Spray the tombstones down and you're done. It takes about 2 minutes. The only downside is it will leave your tombstones with a bit of a shine.

I wonder if a quick brushdown with epoxy or polyester resin would help reinforce the styrofoam a little without changing the look (other than gloss) or melting it.

I don't seal my stones at all...no need to use drylock unless you want that sand grainy look. I just use interior white primer as a base then use matte spray paints...works great...looks great. No issues...

I am a Drylock guy. Lesson learned early is to buy the cheapest exterior latex paint you can find have it tinted gray and put a coat of that on first and then the Drylock. It was taking several coats of the Drylock to cover the foam. With a base coat of gray latex first it only takes one coat of Drylock to cover. Less cost and much quicker. I then use Terra's tea staining method on them to give an aged look.
