I want to know what the best method is for making (or purchasing) fake eyes to use with sculpted heads.
I know the ping pong/deodorant ball method:
My problem with this method is the iris you have to cut out and glue on. Maybe I just need more practice, but I find the paper iris to be frustrating and I can never get it to lay down smooth. I've also been using Ping Pong balls, which have a diameter of 1.575 inches. I've never used a deodorant ball, so I don't know what their diameter is.
Another option I have seen is to purchase glass eyes on eBay. The prices very dramatically, but there are some affordable ones.
My concern with these glass eyes is that they are only 1 inch in diameter. I think that's smaller than what I'm used to, but it may still be accurate.
So, I ask all of you, how do you perfect the fake eye?
Will be posting a tutorial sometime in September. Kind of overwhelmed in real life. Irises are 1/2" on average. To make the flat spot, you need a solid ball, use a 1/2" forstner bit in a drill press to make a shallow hole, then fill it with epoxy so you have a flat surface to put the irises on. You can order 1/2" hole punches online (have yet to find one in a craft store) or you can get a set of hole punches (they look like nail sets, but are hollow on the inside so you punch out a circle) at Harbor Freight for about $8, the largest one is 1/2".
If you want a larger sphere, maybe try making one out of polymer clay. Or I think you can find 1 1/2" wooden balls in craft stores and paint them white. You'll probably want to use a larger size iris for larger balls.
I use the cheap acrylic eBay half round eyeballs. They are 28mm which is slightly bigger than an inch. If you don't mind waiting for shipping from China, I highly recommend them. They have a think clear lens over the iris and pupil for added realism.
