Hey guys and gals, first off since this is my very first post lemme introduce myself. My name is Rich, Im from Omaha, NE and Im 24. I have been doing a yard haunt on my own for 4 years. I have been helping my Dad decorate for all the holidays as long as I can remember.

Now that the formality is out of the way, I am building a scarecrow prop. This is not my first prop I have built, I have done a couple small scale, mediocre things before (reaper, chiller, and coffin). But, this will be my biggest undertaking to date. I have a base I built last year just never got a prop on it. Today, I paper mached a balloon for his head. After dry, I will do a little sculpting to him with clay to get the shape and look I want then Ill do another mache coat. Then possibly Monster Mud him. What Im posting for is to ask you guys for any hidden tips for this prop that I may not know about. Maybe some cautionary tales the people who have done this before. Or if Im heading in the wrong direction let me know.

Mind you, Im doing a full batman-esque scarecrow so, any help regarding the base, head, body, anything I would greatly appreciate it. Once I get some things done of note to him Ill post pics.

Here's to a long and haunting relationship,
    Rich

Sounds good. Let things take shape as you go. New ideas will come along during the process. Take pics as you go if possible, it's easier for people here to chime in if they can see your project. There is a scarecrow in one of my albums which was the result of paper mache head and hands, and a monstermud body if you'd like to see something else like that.

    Welcome to the forum.

Tell us more about the clay you are planning to use. Do you have any reference pics that you are using as you go? Can you share them?

Welcome Rclsu13, I'm new here too and also have a scarecrow under construction right now. Check out my album in my profile if you'd like to see the "play by play." There is also another recent one here called "Ye Ol' Pumpkinrot" that is currently under construction that is really cool. Look back a page or two in this forum to find it. Chop Shop has some amazing projects that will also inspire you. The talent in this forum is amazing. Check them out and have fun!
    Shhhh. Wait. What was that?

Well, Im just kinda going by the seat of pants on this one folks. Plans are to mache a couple layers, do the clay scuplting (simple modeling clay, nothing special), and mache another layer or so over the scuplt to hold shape. Once im happy with that, Im planning on doing a burlap batman-esque hood for him. Obviously there will be places in the sack where the scuplt is seen through. Im going to give this Monster Mud thing a shot with the burlap so he is nice and sturdy. Tomorrow will be the first picture of any progress, ill start the sculpt tomorrow. Its really awesome to see you guys geting behind me on this one. Hopefully I can do ya proud!

This is very roughly the look Im going for, but my brain will twist this bad boy in my own way.

Alright guys, I told you I would post some progress today and so I am. Basically what I did today was get the basic form of the face sculpted. Tomorrow I will add more details. Mind you, all this will be covered with another mache layer, most will be covered with burlap and monster mud. Im pretty pleased with the progress. It just sucks only being able to work on it for an hour or so a night. I work two jobs so my time is limited, and I get to stew about my plans all day long at work Well hope you enjoy the pics, and as usual bring on the comments.
