I had someone ask me if I could make them a large pirate themed tombstone. So far, the stone is primed, sealed, glued, sealed, and carved to a point. Now I'm going back and forth on what to do to make the pirate theme pop.
Originally the design was going to be a stark drop off to the embedded letters of the epitaph. I didn't like it so I tried to add a slight angle to it. My hand slipped and I suddenly had to turn it into an almost sunburst-like pattern around the epitaph. I love that. The problem is that my original idea--carving a parrot out of a separate piece of foam to rest on the top right edge of the stone--is out of the question now. There's A) not enough room and B) no safe way to ship it if I add the bird hanging over the edge.
I'm trying to decide what to carve out for the bottom. I'm open to suggestions. I thought I settled on a skull and crossbones, but then I thought I could do it as a pirate flag, or a ship, or a treasure chest and adding some coins and treasure to the sides, or even mess around with an eye-patch coming over the embedded epitaph. I'm paralyzed by the possibilities. What do you think?

I'm surprised no one had any suggestions for this. I eventually settled on doing a treasure chest brimming with jewels, coins, and pearls. Here's the finished structure of the piece.

And a less blurry close-up of the chest

I've already straightened out the keyhole, glued down the top left corner, and removed the fake wood attempt on the side of the chest.

Looks great! Nice, original appearance to it.
