For years I have had two witches that stand next to a cauldron. Both witches are made from 2x4s, some old clothes, and those cheap styrofoam heads from Value Village.
This year, I really want to rebuild the witches so they look better and, hopefully, move! I'm actually going to make one of them stir the cauldron! I know, what a stretch for this forum.
Anyway, here are the old witches -- just for reference.
And here is my first attempt EVER at using clay to sculpt a face. Please let me know what you think, and where I can improve. My hope is to make on witch plump and the other skinny. This is the plump witch. (Oh, and I still need to add a few warts).

I've sculpted a bit before, but I'm not good.

For a first attempt (or any attempt!), I'd say you're a natural. The modeling of the exaggerated features like the brows, nose and chin are well balanced and work well together. She looks really really good in a scary old witch type way.
What sort of clay or modeling compound are you using? It looks so smooth and nice. Can't wait to see her painted!I'm a Halloween Bride! 10/31/2002

Wow! Really great! I'm so impressed...great detail. Love the wrinkles, brow and nose. What are you using for the eyes? These will be a huge improvement. You're really talented.

The eyes are just ping pong balls that I colored iris' on with some of my daughter's colored pencils. The clay is the air dry clay from Michaels. I bought 5 pounds for $10 (wish I had a coupon, but I was in a hurry).

I still see some problems with it, but it's a big improvement over the painted styrofoam head. I think I want to play with the nose some more, and add some details like warts.
Still, for something I started last night, it's not too bad so far!

I'm diggin' it. It has character, and that's the big thing. I like your proportions, and the anatomy's pretty good. I'd like to see the brow area evened out a little, but that's a top-notch first attempt (seriously, you don't even want to see the first witch I sculpted)!
