Hi All,
This is my first efforts to make paper mache props. My Hell on Earth theme is in progress but I am stuck on painting issues. These wings will attach to a 5'7" skeletal demon. Would you paint them gray/black or neutral? stain them? both? Don't mind the goofy boyfriend. He just joined the forum by the way, so this is "firegoat".

I wouldn't use black other than for shadowing. Stain a lite (blonde-ish) color & add dry brush staining with a darker (Mahogany) to add depth. ( maybe wipe off as little with water or thinners pending stain your using for added effect ) Would give it a semi transparency to make look like wing skin.
Airbrush or use a small brush to add thin veins.....
Maybe look at a few pics of wings of bats..... for a color concept....? Winged Monkeys are harder to find this time of year....
When you look in the mirror at midnight,....what looks back at you.........

I would match the color of the wings with the color of the demon it's attached. Agree with Dark Lord with everything he said. Perhaps also think of using clear gloss on the membrane part of the wings to also make them look organic. Oh, maybe cut a few holes in them too.

Thanks for the tips, Terra. I watched your demon horse tutorial today and was inspired by the holes.
I did not do a tutorial on this pair. I wasn't confident how they would turn out. But I have a couple more pairs to make and will do my best to photo the steps.

I love the demon wings. I think you have received some great advice about the colours so I can't add anything beneficial. I wonder how strong they are? I built one animated devil last year who I bought wings for sturdiness and longevity. Are you using your wing design for static props or animated props? I have two more animated devils to do that will come out of hell holes. I think one will have the same motion as a grave grabber, and the other is undecided. Do you think your wings would last in such a design?
Thanks, and I look forward to a tutorial when you finish your next wings. When storage is a concearn, put your monster props under the kids beds.

They seem sturdy to me I guess. They are lined with 16 gauge wire. I used this for stability as well as getting the curves i wanted. Hindsight has encouraged me to attach pvc to the wing's bony section as I build it. For this pair I may have to pierce the top under the boney arm (again lined with wire) and string a bit of fishing line to pull it up to get the height I want behind the demon. I have ZERO experience in pneumatic props. When I make to tutorial, I would maybe suggest using paper-mached cheesecloth instead of the window foam sheets I used.
