I'm in the process of making a laser vortex to add to my graveyard sceen for this year. I would like to know if anyone has done this with the laser pen powered by a wall wart. Some detailed instructions would be awesome!
Hi. I haven't done the wallwart on my laser, but if you go that route just check the actual voltage you get from the wallwart you intend to use with a voltmeter. Some (many) don't seem to be tightly regulated and put out a higher voltage than listed on the label. I just used a wallwart to power a motor that put out 13V (even under load) but was rated at 9V.
Here's a link to a tutorial by Brandywine Cemetery's laser vortex how-to where they used a beefer batter pack instead of a wallwart for the extended use time.
I did this last year, and it was not as easy as it would seem. Like Demon Dog said, most wall warts aren't well regulated. Also, most cheap wall warts have a lot of ripple. That caused tons of problems with my green pointer. I ended up using a regulated 5v, 2a wall wart and dropping that down to about 3.2v for my green and violet pointers through separate regulators so I could adjust each independently.
Red pointers are a lot less picky about their power requirements, so a 3v wall wart might work well.
