I'm looking to add one or two pnuematic props this year to my collection. I would like to keep the compressor inside in the basement, as this is where my props will be, does anyone have any recommendations on buying a quiet, oiless compressor. Thanks

They are all somewhat noisy,..... some more than others, but noisy never the less.
You could build an enclosure with sound proof padding, but you must make sure you give it proper venting with a good fan system !
Best thing if you can is to possibly place compressor near another power source outside or upstairs in another room & run a long extension hose into basement to prop(s).........
( *FYI - always use longer hose than extension cord to reduce load requirements on motor, unless your using a 8-10 gauge ext cord )When you look in the mirror at midnight,....what looks back at you.........

I'd like some recommendations as well, not necessarily for a quiet one, though. Was just looking online at them and they seem to run the gamut on size and cost. A lot of them didn't get good customer ratings. So what do you all use, where did you get it and what was the cost?

Quiet and air compressor is an oxy-moron. There is no such thing. I would recomend putting air compressor outside and run a hose to where you need it.

if you go to www.BEARAIR.com there are compresspors called "SILENT AIR" designed for artist with no space like in a mall setting. and they come in many different sizes too. Good luck.

As TNBrad posted, BearAir has great True silent compressors....yes they do exist....but at a hefty price tag. For air brush artists needing a quiet situation, they're great & worth the investment,.......for home haunting, would be pricey for just that need. Good call THBrad ! I forgot about SilentAir sytems.

The compressor outside with a big section of hose(50-100ft) is your best bet. Here is another thing you can do.
Use 5 or 11 gallon storage tanks if your basement props do not require a ton of air. I would suggest using only single acting cylinders, because the air with only move in one direction. The spring will return it, this will save you air.
I would suggest a check valve on the gallon tank. This will stop air from escaping between filling from the main and bringing it to the basement. I would swap 2 of them, fill one and have it for a backup then fill the other so you have it.

I don't know if this would help but we bought our air compressor from an art store it was 149 and it is pretty silent. No oil change needed. It runs on 1/8 horse power. I don't know if that's enough power for what you want to do.

@It's The Great Pumpkin: Could you list the brand and model number? What kind of psi does it get?

There was an issue of Airbrush Magazine a few years back that had designs for a cover for a compressor that was lined with egg crate foam and had a computer style fan to control the heat. The box had small legs about an inch long for air flow along the bottom.
