I found a local steel supplier. What am I looking for? Square or rectangle? Thickness?

I highly recommend you visit your local recycling center. That's where I get all of my metal for small projects. I buy stuff for next to nothing, essentially a bit over scrape price.

Wonderful job on your prop! Your build is the core for so many prop possibilities, it gets my mind whirling. It just proves that I have so much to learn about pneumatic props, controllers, etc., never mind the whole welding issue! Keep up the great work!

I used 1x2 inch tubing for the base and the 2 uprights that the nose of the cylinder attach to and 1 inch square tubing for the center rail, both the pivoting uprights and for the extender that the spider attaches to. To tell you the truth, I don't remember what thickness it was. I'll check with Ron and see if he remembers when I see him this weekend.

Totally mitered those corners... Nice welding... Even ground off the beads! So vain! lol good work!
I'm hooked... I've been sitting on this spider for like 8 years and looking for something to do with it... a spitting jumper might be a good addition.

All the steel I can get from my supplier here is 1/8" which is good and solid but man some of these props get heavy! This spider is about 3 lbs of foam and latex so I'd probably need a cinder block on the back of the frame.
The nice thing is that damn spider has been a static prop for years so they kids wouldn't expect it... lol
*** as an aside considering the cost of those flow controls from your online store ($8 to $11 each!) I'm starting to think these kits from Frightprops aren't such a bad deal...
