I want to cast some wood ornaments out of Resin to help keep costs down on my tombstones. Only thing is that i have never done this before. My original plan was to push the wood ornaments into clay and then remove leaving a perfect imprint. Then i would bake the clay till it was hard. From here i would spray the mold with a releasing agent of some sort and pour in the resin inserting tooth picks in various areas of the mold to help pull it from the clay once dry. My other idea was to build a box and glue the ornament to the bottom. Next i would fill the box with Liquid latex and let that dry. Once dry i would remove the box and hopefully would be left with a perfect mold that would be flexible enough for me to be able to pop the resin mold out of easily.

I am not sure which method is best but i am hoping that some of you may have a clue.

Thanks in advance for the help!

The latex mold sounds promising. I've tried clay before, but could never get all the detail into the cast, nor get it out without tweaking it somehow.
    Undead and loving it!

Latex, you wouldn't want that thick for a mold. "Glove" Mold Making 101

While it CAN be used for resin: Me Crystal Skulls

It's not the best solution. You'll want a silicone mold release at the very least.

For casting in resin, I would actually suggest using silicone instead of latex. I think it's Scourge that is the one to contact for this kind of thing. He had a tutorial or at least notes on the process somewhere...

    Scourge's tutorial for silicone:

    Foam skull-how to

I've seen another for pour silicone, which is what I think you're after...I'll see if I can find it. I would suggest brush on myself, scourge's method. For cost effectiveness.
