I was thinking of making a virtual fireplace.
    Thought of useing atmosfearfx video:
    http://www.atmosfearfx.com/vill_flames.html
. But for the price, it dosent get your attention.

I see some virtual firplace dvds out there.
thought about using one with the peppers ghost method. placing a pile of skulls behind the plexi.
anyone here have a virtual fireplace dvd, that they can recomend.

I found a few good ones on Youtube, I downloaded & burned to DVD's. They show the inside of fireplace bricks & logs on a grate, I might be able to upload 2 of them to my sharesite for you to download, they are just under 200 MB mp4 files.

Thanks for the offer Dark lord
But I think , since I would be using a peppers ghost set up.
I would need just the flames

    I found this:
    http://www.lightthebox.com/us/view-firestyles/

on the later fires it appears that its just the fire and the stones are real placed in front..
Just what I am looking for.
Bonus it has a chapter of green flames and another for blue flames. Could add an erie effect to a pile of burning skulls.

Ya I thought you didn't need the fireplace area, just flames, I just never found the right fire DVD, but you found it ! I really like that one & the green flame one would be great with a skull pile peppers effect - Good find !

I did a tes this morning.
Didnt have any skulls handy, so I put a mini stormtrooper helmet behind the flames.

please post opinions of the effect.
    Ideas how to imrpove?

problem with this effect is it will change with your veiwing angle. but inset in a fireplace it should be minimized.
but in this clip I purposly moved the camera angle a git to see what would happen:

this clip I kept the camera in pretty much the same position:

this was doen with a 13 tv.
If I decide to proceed I'll use a larger tv mybe 25"

For testing purposes I used a clip from youtube.
The dvd dosent have the stones you see in the test posted earlier.

So I did another test with charcoal painted grey in front and behind the plexi.
Being a black background its too dark to see the charcoal behind the plexi. I may need to paint the inside of the firplace grey to help show the charcoal in the back:
