The blue/pink sheets of foam can be found at Lowe's and Home depot. I Have never used it but I spend alot of time in those places and have come across it many times. I think its about 12 bucks for a 4'x8' sheet that is 1/2 or 1 inch thick. Maybe someone who has used it before could lend more insight.

    lowes & home depot carry blue & pink foamboard in 4x8 & 2x8 sheets from 1/2" to 2" i believe. 2" is about 30 bucks for a 4x8 sheet.

Welcome to my world where it's Halloween 365 days a year!

Look for construction sites dumpsters. Especially where they are prpping for stucco. They use thick styrofoam for forms. Try there. Dumpsters become your next best friend.

This is the Dow version (carried at Lowes); the pink is Owens-Corning brand available at Home Depot. These are the best type of foam for carving. Some places also carry the white pebble/bead foam in large sheets too. A bit harder to carve, but still very workable with some modifications.

Depending on where you live, the pink/blue foamcore insulation in the big box store may not be available in the 1-2 inch thicknesses. Where I am, they only carry 1/3 and 1/2 inch versions.

Check craigslist for construction and dock foam (the white pebbly stuff - but HUGE pieces used to float docks ). I've also had success asking at building sites. DO NOT go on to a site without permission - ask the builders if they have any leftover or scrap insulation foam from house construction.

A friend who works at Lowes told me that they get huge blocks of the white packing foam when they get deliveries of large equipment and they're happy to give them away rather than deal with reccling/returning them. I haven't needed any since she mentioned that, but I used a lot of the white stuff in building my jail. Found most of it by dumpsters, especially near furniture stores.

We use it alot, we screw it on to our wooden surface (with washer) of choice then fill in the screw holes with caulking until level suface arises, then take a soildering iron or hot knife and gently burn lines through it to form block or stone patterns for out rock surfaces and castles, then cover with sheets of cheese cloth and white roofing adhesive, it draws the cheese cloth tight on the foam, sealing it and creating a stone or rocky texture. paint accordingly

Dont forget CL. We scored a bunch of free dock foam last year and then blocks from Tractor Supply.
